Trips blur faster than any other record. By Sunday night a week of driving has collapsed into one number, and the number is whatever felt right at the time. This page gives the miles one place to land, on paper. Print two pages free: a 12-row trip table where you write the date, where the trip ran from and to, what it was for and the miles, then a month totals page with a two-line odometer box. Page one: the trip table, 12 rows

Twelve rows covers a normal month of purposeful driving for a one-person shop, and a page you can finish beats a glovebox of receipts you avoid sorting. Nothing is pre-filled: no sample trips, no miles someone else made up. The from and to cells take landmarks, not street addresses, because "depot" and "client site, north side" match a memory faster than street numbers. The purpose cell is blank on purpose, so the trip's reason is in your words instead of a fixed list you have to translate. The miles column takes the trip distance however you read it: off the dash, off a maps estimate, or off the odometer pair from page two.

Page two: month totals and the odometer

The totals table turns twelve trip rows into six purpose lines: write the purpose once, count its trips, add its miles. Six lines is short enough to read at a glance and wide enough to hold a month. Below it sits the odometer box, two lines: the reading at the month's first trip and the reading at the month's last. A month with both a totaled table and an odometer pair is a month whose driving stays findable, whatever you later need the numbers for.

Four opinions on running the log

Opinions from building record-keeping pages like this one. Take or leave:

1. (Opinion.) Log the trip when it ends, not when the week ends. Same-day logging is twenty seconds at the wheel's edge. A week of reconstruction turns into whatever number feels right, and that number is always round.
2. (Opinion.) Write landmarks in the from and to cells. The street addresses live in your maps app anyway. On paper, "depot" and "north-side client" carry the trip back to memory faster than a full address.
3. (Opinion.) Keep the sheet where the trips start: glovebox, door pocket, clip on the dash. A log that lives in the house only ever captures the trips you remember, and those are the ones that needed no log.
4. (Opinion.) Total the miles column once a week, not just at month end. Five minutes on Friday finds the blank purpose cell while the trip is still fresh. Left to month end, the purpose column fills with guesses that all read "errand".

What this page is
