Matchbook Labs › Catalog › Etsy Listing Photos Guide
A listing photo set is easier to plan as a list of jobs than as a number of pictures. Each slot answers one buyer question: what is it, how big, how it lives in a room, what arrives in the mail. This page lays out the six jobs in one table, adds two short notes on light and background, and closes with four opinions, labeled as such.
How to use it: shoot the table top to bottom for one product in one session before touching the camera settings twice. The six slots cover most physical products; skip a row only when it genuinely does not apply to yours.
| Shot | What it does |
|---|---|
| Hero shot | The whole product, filling most of the frame, on one clean surface. It answers "what am I looking at" in under a second, because most buyers decide on this frame whether to read anything else. |
| Detail shot | One feature up close: a stitch, a grain, a switch, a texture. It answers "what is it made of" and shows the kind of care a full-frame view washes out. |
| Scale shot | The product next to a familiar object: a hand, a doorway, a coffee mug. It answers "how big is it really", which a lone product photo cannot, since a camera carries no sense of size. |
| Lifestyle shot | The product in use, in the room or routine it belongs to. It answers "where does this fit in my life" and lets a buyer picture owning it instead of viewing it. |
| Packaging shot | The box, wrap, or pouch as it ships. It answers "what arrives", which matters for gifts, and quietly signals that shipping was planned rather than improvised. |
| Video frame | A short clip of the product moving: a hinge working, fabric shifting, a lid closing. Video answers the questions still photos dodge, like how the item behaves when handled. |
Window light beats most of what you can buy for a home studio. Put the table near a window, turn off the room lights, and shoot from the side the window faces so the product is lit and the camera is not staring into the glass. Midday sun through thin curtains gives you the soft version; direct sun gives hard shadows, so move the table or wait an hour. One light source from one direction keeps every frame in the set looking like it came from the same day.
Pick one background per set and keep it out of the way: a plain wall, a tabletop, a single sheet of poster board curved into a sweep. The product should hold every point of contrast in the frame; a busy surface steals that job. If you want a second background for the lifestyle row, that is fine, but the hero, detail, and scale rows belong on the same one, so the set reads as one product and not six listings.
This is a photography-craft page: a shot list, two technique notes, and opinions. Etsy is named only to identify the platform whose listing photo slots the table serves, and this site is unaffiliated with Etsy. Nothing here interprets any marketplace policy; photo composition is ordinary seller craft. No line on this page promises views, traffic, or sales. Buyers respond to pictures you take of the product you actually have, and the honest position is to photograph what ships and label what does not.
Six planned frames per product is straightforward; writing that plan fresh for every listing in a shop is the repetitive part. The verbatim product description from the 500 AI Prompts for Etsy & E-commerce Sellers README:
500 AI Prompts for Etsy & E-commerce Sellers
Listings, photos, SEO, marketing, service, pricing, seasonal campaigns, analytics. 10 categories, 50 prompts each.
Category 3 of 10, the one this page is about:
Product Photography & Mockups - Shot lists, styling, lighting, mockup prompts
How to use:
Every prompt contains [bracket] placeholders like [PRODUCT_TYPE] or [PRICE]. Replace each placeholder with your own product, numbers, or text, then run the prompt in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any capable AI assistant.
Two habits that make the outputs better:
- Give real data in the placeholders. Real numbers beat generic answers.
- Follow up. Treat each prompt as a first question, not the whole conversation. Ask the assistant to critique its own answer.
License: Personal and commercial use: use the prompts in your own business, including for client work you deliver.
You may not resell or redistribute this pack as-is, near-as-is, or with minor changes, whether free or paid. If a colleague wants it, send them to the shop.
