Etsy Tags Optimizer Guide

How many tags an Etsy listing takes: 13, and each one caps at 20 characters. That is the whole spec, and it fits in one small table. The hard part is choosing phrases worth the slots, so this page pairs the numbers with a 6-step checklist, four opinions, and a look at a prompt pack that drafts tag sets for you.

How to use it: check your current tags against the facts table first, then run the checklist on one listing end to end. It takes about 15 minutes per listing. The four tips at the end are opinions and labeled as such; the table is not.

The tag facts

FactValue
Tags allowed per listing13 maximum
Characters per tag20 maximum, spaces included
Cost to change tagsFree, and you can edit them any time
Where tags applyPer listing. Editing one listing never changes another

These are the platform's published numbers, current as of the date on this page. Platforms revise specs without announcing it to you, so check the official Etsy help docs before you rely on any number here.

Tag-writing checklist (6 steps)

Generic craft, one listing at a time. Nothing here depends on a tool; a notebook and the listing form cover it.

StepDone means
Use multi-word phrases, not single words. "Linen apron" tells the search engine and the buyer more than "apron" does.No tag is a lone word
Be specific to the item in front of you: its material, its audience, its occasion. Borrow phrases only when they are true of the listing.Every tag matches something visible in the photos
Fill all 13 slots. An empty slot is a phrase you are not matching.13 tags saved, none blank or placeholder
Check each tag against the 20-character limit, spaces included, before you save.Every tag saved without a length error
Cover different intents: what the item is, who it is for, when it gets bought or given. The 13 phrases are not 13 versions of one phrase
Put a date on it. Revisit the tags after a season and swap phrases that no longer match the listing or the season behind it.Next review date is written down

4 opinion tips

  1. Long-tail beats single word. (Opinion.) A specific phrase like "crossback linen apron" competes against fewer listings than "apron" does, and the buyer who types it knows what they want. I would rather match fewer searches that convert than a flood that browses.
  2. Put your strongest phrase in the title too. (Opinion.) Tags and titles are separate fields, and I treat them as one decision: the phrase worth a tag slot is usually worth the title's opening. Doing both keeps the listing speaking with one voice.
  3. Skip adjectives no buyer types. (Opinion.) "Cute," "beautiful," "amazing" eat characters without describing anything checkable. A tag that says "walnut serving tray" carries weight that "gorgeous tray" cannot, because one is a fact and the other is a mood.
  4. Retire duplicates before adding anything new. (Opinion.) When two tags differ by one word, one of them is dead weight. I would cut the weaker and use the slot on a phrase with a different intent behind it.

What this page is

This is a seller-tooling craft page about the tag fields: the published spec, a checklist, and opinions. Etsy is named only to identify the platform whose tag limits the table reports, and this site is unaffiliated with Etsy. Tag-writing is ordinary listing craft, so nothing on this page interprets any marketplace policy. No phrase on this page promises views, traffic, or sales. Search matching is decided by the platform and changes on its schedule; the honest position is to write specific, accurate tags and let the numbers be checked against the official docs.

Where drafted tag sets fit

The checklist works by hand, but 13 good phrases per listing across dozens of listings is the kind of chore a prompt pack takes over. The verbatim product description from the 500 AI Prompts for Etsy & E-commerce Sellers README:
