A description does one job: it answers the buyer's questions in the order they think of them, so the only step left is checkout. This page gives you the five parts every product listing description needs, a before-and-after rewrite of one handmade candle listing, and four opinions. The mechanics here are generic craft for any marketplace, including Etsy listings; nothing on this page touches platform rules, because the description itself is the part you control.
Five parts, in the order buyers read. A short listing can merge some of them, but skipping one usually shows up later as a question in your messages.
| Part | Job | Mechanics |
|---|---|---|
| Hook | Name the buyer and the moment of use. | First one or two lines: who holds this, where it sits, what it replaces. Specific beats clever. |
| Benefits | Translate each feature into a change for the buyer. | One benefit per line, scannable. A spec becomes a benefit when it answers "so what". |
| Specs | Give exact, checkable facts. | Size, material, quantity, what is included, as bullets with real numbers. No rounding that hides anything. |
| Usage | Show the buyer using or personalizing it. | Care, assembly, customization steps, or one concrete scene. Keep steps in order and short. |
| Trust | Answer the worry before it is asked. | Processing time, what happens if something arrives wrong, honest limits. State them plainly. |
Order matters: the hook earns the scroll, benefits hold it, specs and usage close the gap for careful buyers, trust removes the last hesitation.
Both versions below describe the same handmade candle and both stay truthful. The difference is order and framing, nothing else. Example text written for this page.
8oz soy wax candle. Handmade. Burns approximately 40 hours. Glass jar with lid. Makes a great gift.
One slow Sunday, covered: this 8oz soy candle burns for about 40 hours, so a single jar lasts most of a season of evenings. It is poured by hand in small batches, and the glass jar comes with a lid, so you can snuff it, shelve it, and keep the scent in. Burn time, wax, and jar size are listed below; the wick arrives trimmed and ready to light.
What moved: the 40-hour burn time was already in the before version, buried in line three. In the after version it becomes the opening claim, tied to something the buyer recognizes (a whole season of evenings). The lid went from a feature fragment to a small story about storing the candle. Zero new facts were added: a rewrite moves what you already have instead of inventing more.
Opinions, not rules. Take or leave.
Everything above is craft you can apply by hand. When you want the drafting, rewriting, and question-answering done through an AI assistant instead, the prompts below hand that assistant the right instructions.
500 AI Prompts for Etsy & E-commerce Sellers is a library of 500 fill-in-the-blank prompts, 10 categories of 50 each, with every prompt carrying [bracket] placeholders you swap for your product and numbers before running it in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any capable assistant:
Formats: prompts.csv for filtering by category in any spreadsheet app and prompts.md for reading. Personal and commercial use in your own business; no reselling the pack as-is. It is a prompt library, not a course: the prompts tell the assistant what to do, the judgment stays with you.
10 categories × 50 prompts: descriptions, titles & tags, photos, email, pricing, seasonal. CSV + markdown, instant download.
A note on scope: this page covers writing craft only. Nothing here interprets or replaces any marketplace's policies, and the mechanics above work the same on Etsy, Shopify, a craft fair table, or your own site. The candle in the example is illustrative, written for this page.
