Unit Conversion Practice Sheet (Free, Printable)

One page to print: an empty metric ladder table to fill in from your class chart, one worked example, and 8 write-in problems using everyday kitchen and science units. Answers sit in collapsible blocks at the bottom so you can grade yourself after, not during. Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac) prints the sheet; it fits a single page.

How to use this page: print the sheet, fill the ladder table from memory first, then check it against your textbook or class chart before touching the problems. Work each problem on paper with the unit written at every step, and only open an answer block when a full problem set is done. Same routine every session beats a long one once a week.

Six blank rows. Each row is one conversion you want to own: write the unit you start with, the operation in the middle, and the unit you land on. Fill it from your own chart, then keep the sheet next to you while you work so looking things up happens on paper, not on a screen.

These are the factors the problems below use, and they match most class charts. If your course lists a different value anywhere, your course wins; write your version in the ladder table and use it consistently.

Worked example

Convert 2.5 kg to grams. The factor box gives 1 kg = 1,000 g, and the answer should come out in grams, so kilograms get multiplied away:

2.5 kg × (1,000 g / 1 kg) = 2,500 g

Three things happened there. The kg labels canceled diagonally, leaving grams, the unit the question asked for. The number grew instead of shrank, which is right when small units replace big ones. And the unit traveled through every step instead of being attached only at the end. Every problem below can be set up the same way.

Practice problems

Eight write-in problems. Show the setup line, not just the final number; the setup is the part that transfers to harder material later.

  1. Convert 3.2 m to centimeters.
  2. Convert 4,500 g to kilograms.
  3. Convert 0.75 L to milliliters.
  4. A recipe calls for 9 teaspoons of stock. How many tablespoons is that?
  5. Convert 1.2 km to meters.
  6. Convert 2.5 hours to minutes.
  7. Convert 750 mL to liters.
  8. Convert 5,200 m to kilometers.

Answer key

Grade a full set before opening anything. Each block shows the setup, so a miss with matching setup is arithmetic and a miss with different setup is the one to redo.

Answers 1 and 2

1. 3.2 m to cm: 3.2 × 100 = 320 cm. The number grows because cm is the smaller unit.

2. 4,500 g to kg: 4,500 ÷ 1,000 = 4.5 kg. The number shrinks because kg is the bigger unit.

Answers 3 and 4

3. 0.75 L to mL: 0.75 × 1,000 = 750 mL.

4. 9 teaspoons to tablespoons: 9 ÷ 3 = 3 tablespoons. One factor, one step, units cancel to tablespoons.

Answers 5 and 6

5. 1.2 km to m: 1.2 × 1,000 = 1,200 m.

6. 2.5 hours to minutes: 2.5 × 60 = 150 minutes. Time converts with the same setup as length or volume; nothing special about it.

Answers 7 and 8

7. 750 mL to L: 750 ÷ 1,000 = 0.75 L. Notice this is problem 3 run backward; the pair is there so both directions get reps.

8. 5,200 m to km: 5,200 ÷ 1,000 = 5.2 km. If your setup multiplied instead, check which unit should survive: the answer unit is the one that does not cancel.

Four study tips that actually move the needle

  1. Write the unit every step. Not just at the end. Numbers without units are how 4.5 becomes 450 and nobody notices until the grade comes back. When the unit travels through the setup, a canceled-to-nothing unit is visible proof the setup held together.
  2. Fill the ladder table from memory before each session. The table is six rows on purpose. Whatever you cannot write from memory is the row to study, and the sheet tells you that in ten seconds instead of the exam finding out.
  3. Sanity-check the direction. Converting into a smaller unit should make the number bigger, and into a bigger unit smaller. If cm to m left you with a larger number, the operation flipped; catch it there instead of after eight problems.
  4. Redo misses a week later. Keep the graded sheet, and redo only the misses seven days out without looking at the old setup. What survives that gap is what you actually know; everything else gets another lap.

What this worksheet is not

It is general measurement practice: kitchen, metric, and clock units, nothing else. It is not medical guidance and not a substitute for your course materials. Medication math has its own rounding rules, conventions, and safety checks that a generic sheet should not touch, so for that, use the workbook your program assigns and your instructor's materials. Is this measurement conversion worksheet really free?

Why is the ladder table empty?
Because filling it in is the exercise. A pre-filled table gets skimmed once; a table you write from memory, then verify against your chart, tells you exactly which conversions you do not own yet.
Can I use this for nursing or pharmacy school?
Use it for the mechanics only. The unit-canceling and checking habits transfer directly, but the medical conversions, rounding rules, and conventions belong to your course materials, not to a generic sheet.
