Four mazes on this page, from a 9×9 warm-up to the 13×13 boss. Every one was drawn by code and then checked by a solver, so a path from start to finish exists and you will not hit a wall that lies. Maze 1 — 9×9, the warm-up

Start here if it has been a while. 36 steps from IN to OUT on the shortest path, and the dead ends stay short. Start in the top-left cell, finish at the bottom-right one. One path, no loops.

Maze 2 — 11×11, the steady climb

More branches, longer corridors. 68 steps on the only path. Start in the top-left cell, finish at the bottom-right one. One path, no loops.

Maze 3 — 12×12, the winder

Same idea, more rooms to fake you out. 80 steps. Start in the top-left cell, finish at the bottom-right one. One path, no loops.

Maze 4 — 13×13, the real challenge

The full 13×13 grid. Only 46 steps on the path, which is the trap. The grid is wide, the route is narrow, and the dead ends eat your pencil. Start in the top-left cell, finish at the bottom-right one. One path, no loops.

Maze sizes are the difficulty dial

Grid mazes scale in difficulty with size more than with anything else. A 9×9 grid holds so few corridors that the wrong turns stay short; you can hold the whole layout in your head and the dead ends cost you seconds. A 13×13 grid has over twice the intersections, and the branching is where mazes get hard: every junction is a chance to commit to a corridor that dies two turns later. Corridor width never changes. The grid just holds more decisions per inch.

So treat size as the tier label. 9×9 is a warm-up, 11×11 and 12×12 sit in the middle where most adults find a satisfying five-minute solve, and 13×13 is the real challenge. If someone tells you a small maze is hard and a big one is easy, they are describing patience, not the maze.

Three ways to attack a maze that keeps beating you

  1. Fill the dead ends. Trace every corridor that leads nowhere and imagine it walled off. What remains is the path. On paper, shade the dead branches lightly; on screen, hold the route in your head one branch at a time. In my experience this is the fastest method on grid mazes, and it works on every maze on this page because none of them have loops.
  2. Start from the exit. Work backward from OUT instead of forward from IN. Wrong-turn corridors near an entrance are usually the ones the maze designer stocks first; coming the other way, you meet the honest corridors sooner. It also keeps your eyes from drifting back to the start every time you backtrack.
  3. Keep one hand on a wall. Put a finger on the left wall of the entrance and walk without letting go. In a maze with no loops (all four here), this reaches the exit every time, no exceptions. The catch is that it walks you down every dead branch on the left side first, so it is slow. Use it when you would rather be certain than fast.
